As a rising senior majoring in quantitative economics with a concentration in finance, and a certification in data analytics, Anu Mathew has made the most of her time at Millsaps College, both academically and professionally.

Mathew’s educational path began at Singhania School in Mumbai. The decision to study abroad was a significant one, and Millsaps stood out to her for several reasons.
“The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation of the college’s Else School of Management, along with the support from the admissions counselors, made me consider Millsaps,” she recalled. “They made the process so smooth for me that I could pursue the opportunity with ease. After coming here, I realized the importance of the small class size and a good rapport with professors that can prepare us for success both inside and outside of the classroom.”
One of the most impactful relationships Mathew has formed at Millsaps is with Dr. Blakely Fender, professor of economics and J. Armistead Brown Chair of Business Administration.
“Dr. Fender is both a professor and everyone’s best friend,” she shared. “She played a pivotal role in my decision to major in economics. Before I made this choice, I didn’t realize the potential of economics or the flexibility in career choices it offers. Every class with her has been memorable because she ensures the concepts and assignments are relatable to our times and easy to understand.”

Mathew’s involvement on campus is nothing short of extraordinary. She has held numerous leadership positions, including business analyst for ELSEWORKS, presidential ambassadors, Panhellenic president and president of the South Asian Cultural Association.
Additionally, she has served as the treasurer for Phi Mu, resident assistant, writing center consultant, Pathways peer mentor and president of the International Student Organization. Being a part of the Millsaps International Buddy System, ODK and Phi Eta Sigma has further enriched her college experience.
Off-campus, Mathew has gained invaluable experience through various internships. During the summer of 2022, she worked as a business development intern at East Mississippi Business Development Corporation. This was followed by roles as an entrepreneurial development intern and capital intern at Innovate Mississippi.
Currently, she is working as an investments management intern at Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance. These internships have provided her with practical skills and a clearer understanding of her career aspirations.

Looking ahead, Mathew’s career plans involve exploring various opportunities in finance and securing a role that aligns with her skills and interests. Millsaps has equipped her with the knowledge, experience and network to confidently step into the professional world.
Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for the support and opportunities she has received.
“My journey from Mumbai to Millsaps has been one of growth, learning and endless opportunities,” she said. “The supportive community, dedicated faculty and the myriad of experiences both on and off campus have shaped me into the person I am today. As I look forward to my final year and the adventures that await, I am grateful for every moment that has led me to this point.”
