Creative & critical expression

Fine Art at Millsaps allows you to choose a creative approach and major in studio art, a critical approach and major in art history, or a complementary double major in both studio art and art history. You can earn either a B.S. or B.A., or opt to minor in studio art, digital arts or art history. In addition to art, you can express your creativity by studying creative writing or films studies. Creative writing majors pursue excellence in imaginative expression through written language in all its forms. Drawing inspiration from Mississippi’s rich literary tradition, they hone their craft by studying diverse cultural inheritances and historical contexts. Film studies combines both the production and cultural side of film, the film studies minor teaches you about the business and artistic sides of film production and gives you hands-on experience in creating visual art.

Art History

Art History

Enrich your understanding of art by setting it within its broader social and cultural context. Explore artistic meaning through responsive as well as analytical discussion and writing. Acquire an understanding of the vocabulary and methods of analysis of the discipline of art history.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

Pursue excellence in imaginative expression through written language in all its forms. Hone your style by studying diverse cultural inheritances and historical contexts. Emphasis on close reading and careful writing can serve as a platform for any number of professions as well as prepare you for graduate study.

Digital Arts

Digital Arts

A concentration on digital arts focuses on artistic work that uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative or presentation process. A minor is available to majors in art history and any other major outside of the Art Department. It is not allowed for majors in studio art.

Film Studies

Film Studies

The film studies minor provides an overview of cultural and practical issues in film art. Courses include an introduction to film history, study of a particular film genre, and a course in screenwriting or production, plus film-related internships are often available with the Mississippi Film Office and Crossroads Film Festival.

Museum Studies

Museum Studies

Museum Studies. Learn about the structure, operations and functions of museums. Topics include funding, management, marketing, exhibition strategies and educational outreach. You’ll consider the practical, ethical and legal issues of acquisition, handling, conservation and exhibition of museum objects.

Self-Designed Major

Self-Designed Major

Design a major to best fit your personality, career goals and specific educational needs. Previous self-designed majors include international health and economics, global language studies and environmental studies.

An interdisciplinary approach fosters a well-rounded artistic skill set and adaptability in the rapidly evolving landscape of contemporary art. This prepares our graduates for a wide range of careers in arts and related industries.
