Gain a holistic understanding of a region that is economically, politically and culturally vital to the United States. This program builds upon the college’s substantial presence in the region and offers an integrated approach to the study of Latin America’s human and ecological diversity. The program provides a broader perspective than would be possible by taking classes within a single department.

SOAN 3410 Archaeological Field School
This course instructs students in archaeological field methods. It is taught at locations off campus and generally 3-5 weeks. Participate in the scientific investigation of an archaeological site through application of various survey and excavation techniques.
ECON 3040 International Economics
ECON 3040 extends and applies economic theory to international issues with an examination of world money markets, exchange rates, adjustment mechanisms and issues.

Students who major in Latin American studies enjoy careers in business and government and with nonprofits, immigrant rights associations, and fair-trade organizations due to their intimate knowledge of that specific part of the world. Careers in medicine and law also benefit from understanding the cultural heritage of the U.S. population that is Latino.

Gain hands-on experience

Latin American studies students have opportunities for hands-on learning. A few of those internships include Catholic Charities, Mississippi Department of Public Health as well as public- and private-sector language interface and translation services.

Pathways

Our curriculum emphasizes problem solving and critical thinking skills essential to any career (and therefore any Pathway), as well as scientific writing and experimentation skills that may be especially critical to students interested in any of our six Pathways tracks.
